I've been playing with fabric again, one of my favourite activities.  Yesterday I laid out 64 six-inch blocks on the floor then went off and did some laundry.  I popped back into the room to look at the blocks again.  I switched a bunch of them, looked from all angles, did some more rearranging and went off to do some other tasks.  I checked the layout again and asked my husband and daughter for their opinions.  More switching around.  By the time I went to bed last night, I had rearranged the blocks at least a dozen times. (I have to admit I love this process!)  I felt content with the layout but I knew that I wouldn't be completely happy with it until I looked at the blocks one more time. I was excited as I got up this morning to check.  The layout is perfect!  I'm ready to begin sewing.

Happy quilting,

Judy Ann

picture day
I've been doing some interesting research for my Dear Canada. Lots of stuff happened in 1937 - George Gershwin died of a brain tumour, Jean Harlow died of an unidentified illness, Edward married Wallis Simpson (you should see the comments about him in the 1937 newspapers!) and Amelia Earhart disappeared July 2, 1937. But along with that I did do some other things.
Look at this little fellow, one of seven, we found in the barbecue at the cottage. They scampered all over the place, jumping out of the barbecue and onto the deck.

And...Judy Ann's sister works for a furniture store and they were throwing out curtain samples so she snagged some and Judy Ann shared. Here are a couple of things I've made from those samples:

I'm on a mission to use up my scraps! And my stash! My very LARGE stash! Here's one of the stash quilts I made. Pattern is $8.99.  It would make an adorable baby quilt and wait - I'm having a new baby in the family! Need baby quilts!

Some pictures. Every year a group of us get together for a three day quilting retreat. Unfortunately, this year my cottage sprung a leak and I couldn't put anyone up, so instead we went away on a one day shop here. Here we are at the Greenwood Quiltery in Guelph!  Hey, Jas, you don't have your hair parted properly. Odd woman out. :-)

And the newest quilt designed...It's called "In Color."  Great for summer.

And a mini- one day quilting bee at the cottage last weekend with guild members. Lotsa fun...  Okay, that wallpaper has to go. I say that every year, but then, I never tear it down. It's coming down!  Barbara

If there is anything more beautiful than a gorgeous, warm spring day - show it to me! It's perfect - pink crabapple blossoms, blue forget-me-nots, emerald leaves - I must go quilt them! I actually do not like gardening at all, but I'm a great admirer of gardens. I just want them done in fabric. Saturday, Jas, myself and two friends are going on a shop hop of our own, as we weren't able to make it to any of the "official" shop hops. Can't wait! Once I find my camera (no idea where I put it!) I'll take it with me and show you what we saw.

If you've seen my stash, you will know that if I live two lifetimes I probably still could not use it up. I do have a problem passing up fabric.  Actually, I have a problem passing BY fabric. But...in a salute to the tougher economic times, I'm going to make a quilt using just my stash - nothing new. Check back soon to see what I come up with.
My best,
Barb

I designed and made this quilt at our quilt guild Quilt 'til You Wilt day in February. An easy, adorable baby quilt. I'm all into babies now that I'm going to be a grandma this summer.  It is called "Baby Talk."

And the contest.  My brain is having difficulty coming up with a name for this particular quilt. So....if you can name this quilt by Friday, April 3rd and we use your name, we will send you a free pattern of this quilt. The only rule is that it has to be the name of a song.

Yesterday Jas and I went to "Carrie's Quilting and Knitting" shop in Aylmer, Ontario where we spent two hours chatting, selling our patterns and books and helping customer pick out fabric (it's a lot of fun picking out fabric when you're not paying for it yourself!!!)  We had a great time. Be sure to visit Carrie and her shop if you're in the Aylmer area. It's right on the main street. Here are some picture from our visit.

Judy Ann and me with some of our quilt in behind.

Our patterns and my books.

Judy Ann's amazing craft books and samples.

More picture from our visit tomorrow!

We have a leak at our cottage in Grand Bend, well actually so far over 24 leaking pipes have been found and fixed and it still goes on. But...I did manage to in between running up and down, and fighting a flu bug, get to a couple of quilt stores. Sew Creative in Mt. Brydges is a great shop that every time I go, I wonder why I haven't gone sooner! They have a 30% off sale on their panels until the end of Apil, plus a sale on their Pfaff sewing machines and Serger thread is $2.00.
The Marsh Store in Coldstream have these "Bali Pops" , packaged strips of batik style fabric, with which they made up our My Wild Irish Rose pattern. It is so cool to see the pattern done in different fabrics.
And here are a few pics from Petra's store, Quiltworks, on Wilkins Ave. in London, showing some of her fabulous fabric.

Babs!

A friend of mine says her favourite word is "sale" followed by "clearance." In these financially strapped times I totally agree with her.  So be sure to go to Quiltworks on Wilkins Street in London on Saturday for Petra's "First Saturday of the Month" sale where selected fabrics are $9.99.  I'm only attending these sales because of altruistic reasons: I'm trying to help stimulate the economy. Really, that's all! Barbara

And hot off the wire:

Every fabric is on sale - don't miss our $3.50 per metre tables!!

There will be Door-prizes and refreshments.

Okay, so every year for Lent, I give up my favourite treat, chocolate. I've decided that this year I'm going to do something that takes time instead of willpower. I'm going to make a baby quilt, then donate it to our quilt guild. Each year the guild donates many children's quilts to the local Children's Aid Society where they are given to every child in foster care. Many generous members of our guild, including Barb, have made quilts for this program, but I never have. It is high time I did too! I'm using the cutest flannelette fabrics in light green, gold, purple, blue and cream with lots of polka dots, stars and baby things. A friend of mine teased me that it is fun to quilt and not really a sacrifice for Lent at all. I thought about that as I savoured some chocolate and laid out my fabrics for the baby quilt and figured she is probably right. Oh well! I promise not to enjoy myself too much.

Judy Ann
